Fed: Project aims to put books in homes of disadvantaged
CANBERRA, Feb 28 AAP - A successful New Zealand scheme aimed at increasing access to
books for disadvantaged children is to be trialled in Australia.
Education Minister David Kemp said today he had approved plans to pilot the Books in
Homes in Australia scheme, with about $700,000 in federal funding.
Dr Kemp said many children living in disadvantaged circumstances and in remote parts
of Australia had poor access to books.
Public libraries were often inadequate and many families simply could not afford to buy books.
